Intake and Humane Capacity

Wolfe Ridge Farm obtains nearly all its roosters from local feed stores that have the community connections, as they most likely sold the roosters originally.  Community members will relinquish their rooster to the feed store.  The feed store will then contact us to take the rooster into our sanctuary. If we are at a point where we can safely and healthily take in the rooster, we will accept him into our home.  There are times that we are at our safe capacity and cannot in good conscience take in another resident.  This is the hardest decision that we must make.  If we cannot guarantee the Five Freedoms, we cannot accept the rooster.  This is one reason we expand as much as safely and financially possible.

Wolfe Ridge Farm, when capacity allows, will take in any rooster in need.  Not all that come in are healthy enough to survive, but we take them as well, and make the end as comfortable as possible.

Through 20 plus years of nurturing chickens, we have learned most of the minor/common ailment treatments and do not need to seek veterinary care.  Which works out well, since few veterinarians will see chickens and we frequently do not have the funding to afford veterinarian services.

Wolfe Ridge Farm takes care to ensure that we do not exceed our humane capacity, which means that animals are provided with all Five Freedoms while in our care. Unlike a lot of rescue operations, we do not have or seek foster homes for our roosters.  Our safe capacity is based solely on our available housing (coops and isolation units) and feed.  Feed is a major expense determining space for our rooster residents.
